Something that needs addressing....
Something we all take advantage of when on the Internet. gather of info and playing hard.....
This subject keeps sticking in my mind when trying to figure out how to be more sustainable all around.
It has to do with the amount of energy used when sending information over the Internet and how far that information has to travel to get to you.
There is a "total cost" to using the Internet that goes beyond the energy used by your computer. It also includes the energy of every single server in the chain from the source to your computer and every support hardware making those servers along the way work. like wireless network hardware cooking of equipment etc. This is a fact we can not escape. it is part of each of our footprint that is not being figured in when reducing our footprint and consumption.
This link will give you an idea of the sheer waste of energy just to play a game that is not a necessary thing in life to do to survive. It is pure entertainment living in a "fantasy" world. I am guilty of this years ago with 3 months of "Everquest"

It also extends to getting large files from the Internet. Especially "video" and Ultra high resolution Photos, Downloading Large inefficient software programs
(Meaning the code is not optimize for the lowest number of programing code lines). The larger the file the more energy consumed. Each single file might not seem much but it has a massive accumulation effect when you add everybody together who make no effort to reduce there energy intensive "file sharing".
I been at it for 4 hours straight, researching the Internet regarding the energy use of the Internet. It is far between and scarce as a ghost. I am starting to wonder if the reason for lack of info is that the IT industry that runs the Internet is "slap happy" so to speak about what they would claim is "hearsay" in regards to that the info. Info on exactly how much energy is consumed would be extreemly damaging to the Internet business as a whole if people really realized just how much energy is consumed by the use of the Internet alone(especially file sharing or transferring of large files in data packets or Massive online role playing games).
Our excessive usage and aging taking a toll on the energy infrastructure.

In my search of info regarding energy consumption of file sharing I came across this particular hopeful to replace the energy intensive Hard drive.

I also came across this one to show you why it is important to turn the electronics off at the wall outlet by unplugging or having a kill switch like a power surge strip(NOT THE BATTERY BACKUP TYPE!)that you manually switch off at the wall.
