'Eco-iconic' consumer products and services are one of the '8 trends for 2008', according to the consumer trends firm Trendwatching.com. According to the trend spotters, "we've gone from ECO-UGLY (ugly, over-priced, low-performance, unsavory yet eco-friendly versions of the ‘real thing’) to ECO-CHIC (eco-friendly stuff that actually looks as nice and cool as the less sustainable originals) to now ECO-ICONIC."
Trendwatching.com defines 'eco-iconic' as "eco-friendly goods and services sporting bold, iconic markers and design, helping their eco-conscious owners show off their eco-credentials to their peers." At the heart of the trend is a status shift: many consumers are eager to flaunt their green behaviour and possessions because there are now millions of other consumers who are actually impressed by green lifestyles.
In the longer term, there will be a shift from 'eco-iconic' to 'eco-embedded' or 'eco-booster' products, Trendwatching.com predicts. Read more in the
Eco-Iconic Trend Briefing.
