Hello Fabian

Would it be a good idea to generate a SustainabilityForum group at this website. Two benefits:
1. Members will have a feeling of being a part of community.
2. Members can see each other's ecological and carbon footprints and it will also be visible how the impacts of the group are reducing as a whole.

My screenname at the WWF calculator site is abhi_mgmt

Just an idea

Cheers

Abhi

Hi Abhi.

Interesting idea.

So everyone will post their carbon footprint? Or how should I understand this?

On wwf website. There is an easy registration option with just login details where members can decide a screen name. All their footprints including food, travel, energy usage etc will be calculated and displayed with tips on how to reduce each one after the other. If you start a group called sustainabilityforum.com and then invite all members of this forum to join the group at that website.

Then you can generate an option of the members profile in this forum where they can state their carbon footprint and in another column they can state what efforts they are making to reduce this.

I think the best way is to register yourself first and see if you like the whole thing.

Cheers

Abhi

I did check this out. The purpose of this particular calculator was to show that we as individuals can not do it alone regarding reducing our individual foot prints.

It is not accurate enough to find your actual foot print. For it does not take enough information about your life to give an accurate picture. Renters for example have different things that are or are not within their control for example I have no control over heating it is a closed hot water system. I have mine set to off yet hot water still runs through it WWF does not recognize this thus giving me a higher foot print than actual.. it can go either way. My guess its more conservative for I been hearing roomers that Denmark is saying USA consumption is more like 7 planets not the 5 1/2 that WWF claims. for Denmark included more of the foreign industrial that we rely on China imports. That is part of Americans foot print even though its not being produced on domestic soil.

WWF was trying to show that even if you were the greenest options on the survey you could never get it to one planet or less.

They were trying to show that infrastructure is also part of our personal foot print and that industry, Government, and individuals need to work together to reduce it to one planet or less.

I appreciate the link though, in that it was educational in regards to the importance of working together as a whole. it brought it to the forefront of my conscience as a result of doing this calculator. I did it through another forum when I filled it out.

Appreciate your thoughts. However I do not think that it is just about how accurate is the calculator. The best thing about this calcultor is that it is user friendly, allows you to form groups and monitor your footprint on a an individual and group basis and also it gives you a number of tips to actually reduce your footprint. It makes you feel better even if you are able to reduce a little. This is what is important that it encorages you to do more.

In my opinion, it is more about creating the awareness and understanding of what peoples' impacts are as individuals and as groups and encouraging them to reduce it through a number of tips provided. I do not think that the aim is to live one planet living. The aim is to do the best each of us can and at the same time encourage others to do the same.

In my view, this is one good way forward rather than only telling people about climate change and extinction of some species. This sort of calcultor allows people to think what they can do to reduce the impact as an individual or as a group.

I am also looking at other available calculators to see how they are different from each other and would be happy to take this discussion further if there is interest in the forum.

Default heating

i dont use any heating/air conditioning in my home and its silly that this is not an option on the test. one reason i dont use it is coz im trying to get my body to acclimatise to the changes in our environment, so hopefully when the apocalypse actually does come, ill be more than ready to cope with a few extremes. people who use air-conditioning are the very worst i think! they are determined to live in comfort today, without a thought as to the effect on the weather tomorrow.

Dear Kizzag

Welcome to the forum and thanks for your response to one of my threads.

Very much impressed of your efforts about minimizing the use of heating / air conditioning.

You are right that the calculator does not include some very important aspects. However you may see from the earlier posts that there are some features embedded that are not available in other calculators.

I would suggest you to look at some other calculators and see which one suits your requirements. I have provided a number of links to the other available calculators. Please browse through and use them if time permits.

ActonCO2 calculator - .11 server

Carbon footprint calculator | Climate change | BP

iGoogle

Carbon Footprint - Carbon Footprint Calculator

It would be useful if you will share your experience with us in the thread once you had the chance to look at these. I guess that other forum members will be very interested to know more and contribute to the discussion in this area.

Hope to hear from you.

Cheers

Abhi
