Its all smoke and mirrors
The reshuffle of the Prime Minister's cabinet this week has the potential to be very interesting, but it is far from being a shift in their stance on climate change. It should be seen for what it is, a response to the coming election which they have an ever diminishing chance of winning.
The fact Ian Campbell was replaced by Malcolm Turnbull as our Environment Minister does mean that the government has realised that it needs a competent politician in the position. It has not changed any government policies or even made them contemplate thinking about the Kyoto Protocol. They continue to be a reactionary government, only acting when public pressure grows. But even then they often choose to ignore the general consensus and continue to do the bidding of their political contributors.
The ties of the current Australian government to large industry (such as large mining, development and aliminium manufacturers) are still a mayor hurdle for combating climate change here in Australia.
I will only see this reshuffle as a new direction for Australia if is something is done and we start to change. Although I strongly doubt that it will happen until we have a change of government (and even then I am doubtful as the opposition party isn't that much better when it comes to sustainable development).
Australia is a lost cause until such time as the international community can make it change.
