Default getting seniors to do the right thing regarding unnecessary waste

I live in a building for seniors and disabled. One of the things that's been driving me nuts is how selfish the majority of upwards of 80+% seniors are in this building.

I am trying to figure out a way to get across to them that unnecessary waste is bad for everyone especially the younger generations.

Here is a specific example: in the community room we have over head fluorescent every 2 to 3 ft, then they have two plug in lamps on as well. the plug in lamps is in no way making the room brighter. they are on for 12 hours to make it more "homely." They do not use these lights for reading or such, its purely for looks..

I tried to get them to realize that they are killing their grand-kids through such unnecessary waste. Most are over the age of 60 and are in poor health as is.

How do we get them to change their habits and to get them to think of others and to get them to consider the harm being done?.

If we can't get them to see reason, how do we make them do it for the better of the whole?
