Loop diagrams? They are destructive any way you look at it. They are there for human conveniences only nothing else. If you want to see roads in context of damage you need to search deep for what it was like when they weren't there. For example Part of the total cost is it allowed us into areas we shouldn't be on a frequent basis. It allowed us to develop areas which should have stayed pristine. With out the roads we would have treaded lightly in many areas in that it was too much walking in rugged terrain. Look beyond the simple process of simply laying it out and its immediate physical impact of the road itself. Roads allow chemical spills in area where there would have been no chemical spills. Chemicals spilled from car operations oils and such.
Hopefully this will get you thinking in terms of "Total Cost" and "Dust to Dust."
