Ethical Sourcing Manager (Seattle, WA)

Job Summary and Mission:
The Ethical Sourcing Manager position directly supports Starbucks objective to be a leader in ethical sourcing and environmental impact and to deliver on company goals for sustainable agriculture products. The manager will help establish and manage programs, policies, goals, and strategic relationships for sustainable agriculture initiatives across the enterprise. Product areas may include coffee, cocoa, tea, sugar and other food and beverage ingredients. The manager will support the brand strategy for communication of ethical sourcing and oversee key external relationships with business and NGO partners. This position is based in Seattle, WA will likely involve up to 25% travel including some international travel.
Summary of Key Responsibilities:
Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:
Leadership -- Setting goals for the work group, developing organizational capability, and modeling how we work together:
* Identifies and communicates key responsibilities and practices to ensure the organization promotes a successful attitude, confidence in leadership, and teamwork to achieve business results.
* Provides leadership and vision for the team.
* Supports the implementation of company programs to ensure the success of the Company.
Planning and Execution -- Developing strategic and operational plans for the work group, managing execution, and measuring results:
* Assist in developing annual operating plan, budget and quarterly forecast updates.
* Collaborates with the business units and/or functional areas in managing issues and implementing programs and processes to address issues within the individual's area of responsibility.
* Manages programs and initiatives which keep Starbucks in a leadership position within CSR.
* Plans and manages business unit/department processes and practices to ensure that programs are aligned with the Company's business goals and objectives.
* Prepares, communicates and educates client groups and team on changes in policies and practices within the organization.
* Recommends strategies for proactively addressing relevant CSR issues impacting/potentially impacting the Company.
Business Requirements -- Providing functional expertise and executing functional responsibilities:
* Collaborates with other business units and/or functional areas and helps develop plans to manage the Company's CSR issues.
* Maintains external relationships and develops channels for dialogue with key CSR stakeholders, influencers and organizations.
* Manages programs, communications and structural support that will enable Starbucks performance within the CSR arena.
* Manages strategic relationships on behalf of the Company with the appropriate non-governmental organizations, business associations and public agencies.
* Provides subject matter expertise on CSR implications of business issues.
* Researches and communicates the potential impact of emerging CSR issues on company programs and businesses.
Partner Development & Team Building -- Providing partners with coaching, feedback, and developmental opportunities and building effective teams:
* Challenges and inspires partners to achieve business results.
* Conducts and ensures the completion of performance reviews.
* Ensures partners adhere to legal and operational compliance requirements.
* Oversees training and development of partners directly and indirectly managed and makes effective staffing decisions.
* Provides coaching, direction and leadership support to team members in order to achieve partners, business and customer results.
Summary of Experience:
* Direct experience in sustainable agriculture, agroforestry, global sourcing, or corporate social responsibility, preferably including international experience in a business or non-profit/NGO setting (7 years)
* Experience managing and deploying comprehensive programs to address corporate social responsibility issues across internal and external stakeholder groups (7 years)
* Leading and facilitating cross-functional groups (7 years)
* Developing and tracking budgets and financial information (5 years)
* Experience managing the activities of external consultants, auditors, or service providers (5 years)
* Project management experience preferred
* Degree in related field and/or graduate degree in business, environmental sciences, or sustainable development preferred
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
* French and/or Spanish language skills (reading, writing, and speaking) preferred.
* Ability to apply sound business principles and practices to project management and change management processes.
* Strong organizational and project management skills.
* KAbility to apply knowledge of multidisciplinary business principles and practices to achieve successful outcomes in cross-functional projects and activities.
* KAbility to communicate clearly, persuasively and concisely, both orally and in writing.
* Ability to use influence skills to assist groups in achieving consensus and buy-in.
* Ability to manage a professional staff.
* Ability to analyze issues and best practices, anticipate future trends and implement effective stakeholder engagement strategies.

* Ability to create and manage a network of relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
