Description

Christian Brothers Investment Services, Inc. (CBIS) is a manager of managers with $4.5 billion under management in privately offered equity, market neutral, and fixed income commingled funds and separately managed accounts. We are a firm of 50 employees between three offices: Manhattan, NY; Oak Brook, IL and San Francisco, CA. CBIS serves only the Catholic institutional market across a full range of investment products and services.

The Director of Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) is responsible for the direction and management of all elements of the socially responsible investing program at Christian Brothers Investment Services, Inc. (CBIS). This includes all activities relating to the future direction of the program and its day-to-day operation.

The Director is responsible for leading the departmental effort to integrate the main precepts of Catholic Social Teaching into the SRI activities of the firm and also to assist the firm in integrating these same values into its operations as a business.

The Director of Socially Responsible Investing reports to the Executive Vice President.

Responsibilities

Strategy & Planning
• Maintains a vision of SRI and charts the way for CBIS to maintain a position as a leader in the field.
• Promotes a vision of Catholic SRI that is a compelling value-added for CBIS investors and for the Catholic institutional marketplace.
• Developing the social criteria that guides CBIS' investment process as articulated in its investment guidelines. This includes preparation of supporting policy statements and other relevant documents.
• Leads the effort to survey participants to determine key issues and concerns of the firm’s base of clients.

Leadership
• Recognized in the field as a leader and maintains CBIS’ position in the filed as a leader in SRI.
• Directs and supervises the work of staff.
• Provides mentoring and coaching to staff.
• Primary liaison between certain organizations/people with whom CBIS works.
• Responsible for all aspects of resource management, including budget preparation, implementation and oversight of the SRI Department
• The Director of SRI is responsible for participating in presentations, seminars or other activities meant to expand CBIS' SRI visibility in the marketplace.

SRI
• Plan and implement an enhanced SRI research capability, encompassing both domestic and international companies and SRI issues, for identifying companies involved in lines of business or engaged in practices that contradict the values of our participants.
• Plan and implement the following elements of an SRI program: company and issues research; voting of proxies; drafting and filing of shareholder resolutions; participation in certain corporate negotiations/dialogues; and communications with CBIS participants.
• Plan and develop new business initiatives for the SRI program.
• Implement existing SRI Services Unit offerings to current clients and expand the capability to offer to a wider array of prospect clients.
• Work with the vast network of related SRI organizations to: establish CBIS' reputation as a leader in the field and to coordinate work with companies, when appropriate.
• Maintain the efficacy and integrity of the principled purchasing (screening) and proxy voting process.
• Plan, implement and monitor the research information received from a number of domestic and international research sources.
• Establish long term goals for the SRI Department with clear objectives and timetables for achieving. This includes working with SRI department staff in the setting individual goals that are directly related to corporate mission and goals.
• Monitor the preparation of social portfolio analyses for non-CBIS participants interested in the social impact of their investments.
• Monitor and assist in coordinating the SRI contribution to the CBIS newsletter.
• Use current technology to increase the operating efficiency of the department.

Position Requirements

Formal Education & Certification
• College Degree in a related field is required.
• Advanced degree in field where skill set is easily transferable is a strong plus. (Business, Public Policy, Theology, etc)
• Minimum of 7 years of experience working in the field of socially responsible investing, preferably in a senior position. (Willingness to substitute relevant experience in the financial services field).
• Ability to travel on an as needed basis.

Knowledge & Experience

• Catholic Social Teaching. The Director of SRI must have or be willing to acquire a deep understanding of Catholic moral and social teachings and an ability to translate Catholic theological concepts into the SRI practices of the firm.
• Analysis. In addition to providing investment services, CBIS audits the portfolios of Catholic institutions for the consistency with the participant's principles. The Director of SRI will need to be able to gather information about an institution's portfolio, analyzing the social impact of the portfolio and writing a portfolio social audit for the institution.
• Budgetary. The Director of SRI will need sufficient experience or ability in the area of budgeting, budget planning, budget analysis and controlling expenditures. The budgetary process requires an ability to analyze past spending patterns, project future needs of the department and forecast budgets for future plans/projects.
• Strategic Planning. SRI is a critical service that distinguishes CBIS from many other investment advisers. In many cases, it is the principle reason that CBIS is selected. The Director of SRI is responsible to know the field, the participants and future developments in the field that may impact this competitive advantage, in order to make sure that CBIS is positioned as a leader in the field and maintains its competitive advantage.
• Research. The Director of SRI will be responsible for monitoring and, in some cases, implementing the SRI research capabilities. The Director of SRI will need sufficient experience or ability to monitor the SRI social research process to make sure that all research conducted in support of CBIS activities is done thoroughly and accurately.
• Computer Literate. The Director of SRI will need to have significant experience using computers and with various computer software and will need to be comfortable working in a technology oriented environment.
• Planning. Because the Director of SRI will be responsible for monitoring, and in some cases, directly implementing the company's research, social portfolio analysis and proxy voting analysis activities, expertise in detailed planning is essential.
• Public Speaking. The Director of SRI is to be CBIS' primary contact person with the larger social investing community. This will require initiating and taking advantage of invitations to speak at major events. The Director of SRI will need to possess excellent verbal communication skills. This would entail an ability to speak in front of both large and small groups, communicating complex concepts so that they are easily understood.
• Writing. Excellent writing skills, including an ability to communicate complicated ideas in an easily understood manner, are necessary. The Director of SRI will be writing about corporate responsibility issues for an audience with varying levels of business expertise.
• Supervisory. Responsible for supervising the members of the SRI Department. This requires an ability to monitor the progress of others, provide support to others in the fulfillment of their individual work goals and to be able to resolve conflict that may arise. Prior successful supervisory experience and/or training in interpersonal skill development are required for this position and preferred upon hiring.
