This is an internationally acclaimed, award-winning firm of architects, master planners and interior designers – with a team of nearly 400 staff working in offices across the globe. Celebrating 60 years of design success this architectural firm is now one of the UK’s premier designers of retail and leisure destinations.
Enjoying increased recognition within the Commercial, Mixed-Use, Residential and Transport sectors, in 2007 the firm’s Board took the decision to make sustainability an intrinsic part of the firm’s strategic development. They are now embarking on a programme to fully integrate sustainability into the growth and development of the firm as a whole, as well as developing the capability to give strategic and technical guidance on sustainability issues and considerations to its clients.
The Role
Reporting directly to the Board, the new Sustainability Director will be responsible for creating and delivering the firm’s sustainability policy, and will benefit from a good degree of autonomy.
This is an excellent opportunity to influence the future direction of the firm, and make a positive impact on their footprint as a company and the facilities they design.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for leading a small team initially comprising an Operational Sustainability Officer and a Sustainable Design Officer, plus an Administrator. In addition, the Sustainability Director will head working groups of Sustainability Champions across all functions and across all geographical areas.
Responsibilities will include: the assessment and benchmarking of environmental and sustainability performance of both the firm’s internal operations and its projects delivered; the development and implementation of appropriate long-term strategies to implement change, which will include the development of KPIs, targets and reporting and management systems for internal operations; and the integration of sustainability considerations into all design commissions.
Working closely with the communications team, they will forge competitive advantage through the creation and communication of best practices and a culture of environmental sustainability.
They will communicate this new strategy to employees, clients and suppliers. This will also involve representing the firm at industry associations and organisations. The successful applicant will play a key role in shaping the sustainability agenda both within the company and in its chosen markets. By doing so they will enhance existing operations and projects and also ensure continued competitive advantage into the future.
The successful candidate will report directly to the Board and develop a small team (to be either recruited externally or internally) who will report to them and will also establish a network of sustainability champions across the organisation. They will produce and deliver group reports on sustainability to the Group Board & Executive Committee.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will possess the following competencies;
- An outstanding influencer and driver of change who is awarded credibility in the area of sustainability and the built environment
- Will have achieved chartered status in chosen profession
- A strong commercial mindset with a strong eye for adding value within business processes and creating return on investments. Sustainability will become a key element in the development of new commissions.
- 8-10 years experience working within the construction / built environment sector with 4-5 years experience working within CSR and/or Sustainability, implementing social and environmental management systems, with a keen understanding of trends, risk and opportunities in the sector.
- An excellent communicator and public speaker, capable of representing the organisation within the industry. They will also possess the ability to write and deliver board papers and internal policies to inspire change.
- A pragmatic, commercial approach with an expert grasp of the business case for environmental sustainability, and significant experience of the built environment.
