UK: Sustainable Development Manager
Woking, UK
£45,000 - £55,000
Full-Time
Immediate
SAB Miller
Description
An opportunity to join a dynamic FTSE 30 multinational with an innovative approach to sustainable development.
A key player in the SABMiller plc sustainable development (SD) team, this role will lead the communication of our SD efforts in order to support the group’s reputation as a responsible global business. Our extensive global operations mean that the role will engage daily with our businesses in Africa, Latin America, the US, Asia, and Europe on issues such as enterprise development, water, carbon, HIV/Aids and corporate social investment.
The role has particular responsibility for internal benchmarking and external reporting and communications. In addition there will be opportunities for the role to engage with the broad range of projects managed by the SD team. An important part of the role is some overseas travel to build internal relationships, train staff and engage with stakeholders.
The key responsibilities of the role include:
• Project managing the internal benchmarking process on SD, (including managing internal and external support resources), coaching the businesses on the development of SD action plans, setting minimum standards on SD issues and presenting performance to senior management at a global and regional level. This benchmarking process allows our different business units to focus on the SD priorities most relevant to them, whilst meeting minimum standards
• Leading the SD reporting process for the group, including writing the annual group SD report, building lively case studies, developing an innovative web resource, and advising subsidiaries around the world on their reporting
• Engaging with external stakeholders on SD communications best practice
• Taking responsibility for our ‘transparency’ priority – one of SABMiller’s 10 SD priorities
The role is based in Woking, Surrey, UK, with some international travel.
Organisational Context
The SD team is part of the group Corporate Affairs Department. The SD framework consists of ten SD priorities:
1. Discourage irresponsible drinking
2. Make more beer using less water
3. Reduce our energy carbon footprint
4. Have a vibrant packaging reuse and recycling economy
5. Work toward zero waste operations
6. Have supply chains that reflect our own values and our commitment to sustainable development
7. Have respect for human rights
8. Bring benefits to the communities we serve
9. Contribute to the reduction of HIV/AIDS within our sphere of influence
10. Be transparent in reporting our progress on sustainable development priorities
The role advises the board, the Director of Corporate Affairs and the Head of SD on developments in best practice SD measurement, reporting and integration into business planning, and ensures that the group stays in the leading group of FTSE 100 companies in these areas.
The role does not have direct reports but cannot be successful without providing strong leadership to a virtual team of around 130 users of the SD benchmarking system across the group. Excellent relationships with senior managers across the group in the technical, HR and legal areas are critically important.
Competence Requirements
(i) Knowledge and Experience Required
• Significant experience of working on SD issues within a major corporate, a consultancy or the public sector
• Significant experience of managing complex projects with a variety of stakeholders to tight deadlines
• Strong experience of writing SD reports or other related copy
• Undergraduate degree in a relevant field and ideally a masters degree in a related field such as environment, business, social sciences, or engineering
• Solid computer competence and literacy – MS Word, Excel, Power Point, and ideally Hyperion
(ii) Roles, Skills and Attributes Required
• Excellent written, data and oral skills
• Able to engage with staff from senior levels to plant manager with credibility and persuasiveness
• Ability to manage with confidence complex projects with significant uncertainty
• Ability to think ahead, meet deadlines and take tough decisions
