Default Urban planner / software geek says hi

Hi folks! I work as a software developer, but I also have a masters in urban studies and I spend a lot of my spare time thinking about and working on urban planning issues, especially as they relate to environmentalism. I'm particularly interested in finding ways to preserve the urban form and reduce energy cost & use.

I write a blog (The Gross Report) that covers these issues in large part. I just posted an entry on a new form of urban supply chain, one which reduces energy costs and can potentially improve community building and quality of life for residents. Please take a look and let me know what you think--I'm eager to hear the ideas of other people for whom environmentalism & sustainability are real priorities.

Thanks,
--Steve

Urban form??

Urban sprawl? or what about urban do you like to preserve?

big homes? multi cars? Lots of turf grass loaded with chemicals?

OK read a little on your blog.

Want to cut the energy used: Localize everything, Minimize the world market.
This is an over simplification but I hope it drives home the point. If it wasn't for globalization the brain drain would not have occurred so to speak.

Shorten the length of the supply chain then fewer resources and cheaper.

Asparagus grown locally will not have the expense or energy of flying it in a 747.

By globalizing it makes way for mono everything thus the brains from afar have to congregate at a small area.
:peace:
