Hi folks

I maintain a blog on the subject of Global Warming and the role of agriculture in sequestering CO2. I currently have over 90 posts. Go to:

Global Warming

I have also been asked to operate a financial newsletter focused on alternative energy systems. It will initially have a free distribution to get the audience created.

A principal theme in my Blog has been the coming terra preta revolution in sustainable agriculture. If you are not familiar with this check titles in my blog for corn and biochar

Hi,

I wanted to reply to your blog, Global Warming: Bjorn Lomborg and Temperature Related Death, but it requires me to join so I thought I would post here.

In UK/Europe we call this Excess Winter Death.

The highest EWD rate in Europe is in Portugal. England is not far from the top of the list. Eastern Europe and Scandinavia are near the bottom.

In the UK, the Government gives old people around £200 so that they can afford to keep their heating on (aka fuel poverty). Many older people would prefer to spend that money on presents for their grandchildren than keeping themselves warm.

I believe CHP and community heating - used in many eastern European and Scandinavian countries - is a good way to deal with this issue.

Lomborg is a statistician not an economist?

Also in the UK, insurance companies are currently requiring trees near houses to be cut down, due to subsidence issues.

All the best.

Hi All

I fully agree that our problems need to be solved by careful adjustment of the economics. At least that is the absolute first step.

It is not only the third world that sees billions put into reforestration programs that get converted to charcoal a few short years later.

All of temperate zone agriculture is unable to properly manage necessary temperate zone forests simply because the individual cannot live long enough to realize the rewards. The simple expedient of partnering with the landholder and sharing in the sale of sawn wood later creates a new form of property title that fully justifies the government providing early capital for planting and ongoing cash for maintenance. The process should start breaking even fairly quickly, and boots on the ground maximises peformance. and it does not have to be a monoculture at all.

The landholder still owns specific title that he can trade and or barter, with his partner acting as referee..

The long term financial model suggested means government involvement since governments are usually the only entities that can operate on 100 year time horizons. On the other hand, ther could well develop a private funding mechanism that works. I do think governments will have to show everyone how it is done.
