PLEASE ASK YOUR MP TO SIGN EARLY DAY MOTION 123 (it only takes a few minutes)

Dr Howard Stoate MP has very kindly posted Early Day Motion 123 08-09 in support of the DESERTEC concept ("Concentrating solar power and the creation of a high voltage direct current supergrid", see below). If you have not done so already, please write to your MP, asking him or her to sign the EDM.

To make this as painless as possible, an example letter has been provided, with a link to the free WriteToThem service, on this page: trec-uk.org.uk/EDM123 .

So far, 97 MPs have signed the EDM. Please help to raise the number above the "magic" 100, and hopefully a lot more.

It would also be helpful if you would add the following two lines to your email signature:

It only takes a few minutes.

THE DESERTEC CONCEPT

"Clean power from deserts"

The DESERTEC concept has been developed by the 'TREC' international network of scientists and engineers with members in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. In brief, it means:

* Generating clean solar electricity in desert regions using the proven technology of concentrating solar power (CSP).
* Transmitting the electricity to where it is needed using low-loss 'HVDC' transmission lines.
* Spin-off benefits, mainly for people in host countries, including the desalination of sea water using waste heat from power generation, and several potential uses for the shaded areas under the solar collectors, including horticulture using desalinated sea water.

The worldwide potential of the DESERTEC concept is colossal. It is probably the single most effective means of decarbonising the world's economy:

* Using CSP, less than 1% of the world's deserts could generate as much electricity as the world is now using.
* It is feasible and economic to transmit solar electricity for 3000 km or more using low-loss HVDC transmission lines.
* 90% of the world's population lives within 2700 km of a desert.
