Europe "failing to tackle illegal timber imports"

ENDS Europe DAILY 2590, 22/07/08

Europe continues to import significant quantities of illegally logged timber despite setting rules to tackle the problem through partnerships with exporting countries, according to a WWF study published on Tuesday. Almost one fifth of wood imported into the EU in 2006 came from illegal or dubious sources, the study shows. The European commission is preparing proposals to strengthen legislation in this area. Importers should be required to prove that timber comes from certified sources and face sanctions for breaching the law, WWF says. See press release and study.
